After I wrote the blog post noting how PriceRite does not give out free plastic bags for your purchases, I heard about two other stores in the Rochester area that have started promotions to reduce the amount of plastic bags used. Both Wegmans and CVS are using the carrot rather than stick approach to get shoppers to bring their own reusable bags. And both promotions will save you cash!
Bring a Reusable Bag to Wegmans Get a Coupon
In an effort to increase the amount of people who use reusable bag instead of disposable plastic bags, Wegmans will be giving us an incentive to go green. For the next six weeks, when you bring a reusable bag for use at the checkout, the cashier will give you a $1 coupon good on your next purchase. According the article, it’s not clear whether it will be a coupon for a $1 off anything or only off particular products. I’ll be using my reusable bag this week and I’ll let you know!
If you’re feeling lucky, you can enter the Wegmans Reusable Bag Contest for a chance to win $100 Wegmans Gift Card.
CVS Green Bag Tag
On your next shopping trip to CVS, look for the Green Bag Tag (shown below).
You can purchase one of these for $.99 and attach it to your reusable shopping bag. Every time you shop at CVS with your reusable bag, have the cashier scan your tag. You will earn $1 in Extra Care Bucks every four times your tag is scanned. (Limit one Green Bag Tag scan per day per household.) Hopefully this is just the incentive CVS customers need to help reduce the use of plastic bags.
